How to Apply Pencil Eyeliner Without Smudging
Among the different types of eyeliners, it’s the pencil variety that isn’t popular among the novice makeup artists. This is because it takes longer to apply than the gel or liquid eyeliners. And there’s always the tendency to smudge because no pencil eyeliners are a hundred percent waterproof.
However, some professionals do swear by the beauty of the eyeliner pencils. As a beginner, it’s important to start learning how to use eyeliners with a pencil first because you have better control with this than a brush. With some practice, it’s easy to master the art. Once you’ve got the knack for this, you’ll find using liquid liners a breeze.
Here are some tips on how to apply pencil eyeliner perfectly:
- Tight lining can be done using a pencil eyeliner. Use a soft pencil to contour the waterline of the upper and bottom lashes. Hold your lids up and apply the pencil from the middle working your way towards the corners. With this as base, you can then move on to pencil lining right above the waterline. To do this, it’s highly recommended to use a pencil liner over a gel/liquid because you have more control. This way, you have no tendency to get it into the eyes.
- Use short strokes or small lines when applying the pencil eyeliner. It’s not recommended to apply pencil liners all at once with one stroke because you might not make a straight line this way. Remember that it shouldn’t be one perfect line. Imagine that you’re connecting small lines together and then repeating it over and over until you reach the corners. This will help create one continuous line. Don’t worry if you don’t get it perfect because you can always come back and do it again, one short stroke at a time.
- Start by applying the pencil on the middle of the eye lid. Always start in the middle and stay as close to the lash line as possible. Continue by wiggling the pencil out to the corners of the eyelids. This is the first rule to remember.
- Use a small brush to blend in order to give it a smoky effect. If not, use a clean finger to do the same.
- Repeat Steps 1 and 2 on the lower lids. It’s better to dot it along the lashes; going from the middle of the bottom lids working your way towards the outer corner of the eye. Then go back from the middle portion again working towards the inner part of the eyelid this time. Remember the first rule.
- Repeat the tight lining process on the lower waterline as well. Sometimes you can’t see any color on the first application because the lower waterline gets wet more. So you have to keep going back and forth until you get a full coverage. Smudge your finger on the lower lid to blend it out. After you’ve completed both eyes, you can see a smokier effect in comparison to the solid lines that liquid eyeliners usually make. Because of this, you’ll easily warm up to using pencil liners more and more as you go along.
